Shemirat HaLashon

"When R. Huna b. R. Yehoshua took ill, R. Pappa went to visit him. Seeing that he was gravely ill, he said: 'Ready his escort' [i.e., funeral shrouds]." In the end, however, he recovered, and R. Pappa was embarrassed to be seen by him. [Later,] R. Huna asked him: "What did you see?" [that prompted you to say what you did? (And R. Pappa answered him.)] R. Huna (in response): "I really was designated for death, but the Holy One Blessed be He said [to the angels assigned thereto]: 'Since he is not exacting [in slights to himself], do not be exacting with him.'"

This is obvious, for the Holy One, blessed be He, repays measure for measure (Sanhedrin 90a). Thus he who has mercy and does kindness with others, will also be shown mercy when he is judged and pardoned of his sins with kindliness. For such pardoning is justice, since it corresponds measure for measure to his practice. This is what our sages, of blessed memory, taught: "who is forgiven iniquity? he who overlooks transgression [committed against himself]" (Rosh Hashana 17a).

Shenei Luchot HaBerit

Still a little later he refers to Jacob's attribute of אמת, when he thanks G–d for making his mission successful with the words: 24,27) ברוך ה' אלוקי אדוני אברהם אשר לא עזב חסדו ואמתו מעם אדוני).

BEARING INSULTS: The second division of humility is in bearing insults. Behold, our sages, of blessed memory, explicitly said: "Who is forgiven iniquity? He who overlooks transgression" (Rosh Hashana 17b).

Mesilat Yesharim

Likewise they said: "'for the remnant of His inheritance' (Michah 7:18) - for him who makes himself a mere remnant" (Rosh Hashana 17b).
